STRATEGY

The goals of the projects undertaken by First Principles Communications are invariably to promote actions by a variety of stakeholders to the benefit of our clients.

Level One
We believe we do our best work when involved in setting an organization's over-arching goals and mission.

At CN this meant changing the culture from crown corporation to free enterprise. At Northern Telecom this meant making employees at all levels understand they were encouraged to show initiative, rather than simply follow standard procedures. At Hydro One it meant returning authority to field management after all control had been centralized by a previous executive group.

This is where being at the right hand of the CEO is so important.

Level Two
To attain these overall organizational goals we develop sub-strategies (we call them missions) using a three-dimensional concept we call the mission and matrix.

Each mission -- "demonstrate management depth so stakeholders will confidently invest time or money with us" for instance -- is tackled by developing a matrix made up of a series of messages, delivered by a variety of vehicles, to a number of audiences.

These are all based on fundamental concepts  of First Principles Communication

  1. Communication matters. Good communication does make a difference.

  2. Technology is only a tool, not an end in itself.

  3. Simplicity beats complexity.

  4.
  5. The quality of the journey is as important as the destination. (Results matter. And behaviour matters, too.)

  6. For our clients, we provide professional services on par with lawyers and accountants. We operate with the same ethos and devotion to professionalism. In return, we require the same respect.
