Puerto Vallarta:
a living still-life
September 1990

As much as I like to shoot in black-and-white, it did not seem the fitting medium for capturing images at the market in Puerto Vallarta. Life in Mexico is all about colour: saturated hues and high contrasts.

At the Puerto Vallarta market, in addition to fresh fruit, vegetables (the delicious smell of cilantro is everywhere), and day’s catch hauled from the ocean, the main attractions are native woven handicrafts: bracelets, headbands, serapes, and blankets in traditional patterns. Shot together, they make marvellous mosaic-like tableaux. As many tourists have noted, the pace of life slows down a lot in Mexico. And why not? They’re on vacation. But taking it easy is different than just waiting for something to happen. Often in Mexico, I have had the feeling that the people are hanging around, hanging out, just waiting for something—anything—to happen next. Like the man leaning on his cane by the red Ford. Like the ice cream vendor, waiting for his next customer.
